Bacharach is a small medieval town on a steep bend of the Rhine, and this view takes in its riverside houses and the wooded hills behind them. The Wernerkapelle, a Gothic church whose roofless ruin still stands above the town, is one of the landmarks that drew nineteenth-century travelers up the river. The photochrom process used here, developed in Switzerland, applied several stone-printed color layers to a photograph, and companies issued such views as souvenirs during the 1890s. The result shows how the Rhine valley was packaged for tourists of that period.
