Bacharach sits on a steep bend of the Middle Rhine, and this view takes in the town's half-timbered roofs and the ruins of Stahleck Castle on the hillside above it. The castle dates to the 12th century and was the seat of the Palatine counts. French troops destroyed much of it in 1689, and the ruins were left standing as a landmark for travelers on the river. The color comes from the photochrom process, in which a black-and-white photograph guided the hand-applied colors printed from lithographic stones. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views to American buyers in the late 1890s, when Rhine travel was a popular subject.
