The Hahnentor, or Rooster Gate, is one of the surviving medieval gates of Cologne's city wall, a stone passage that once controlled traffic into the old city from the southwest. Its image here shows the gate as a practical landmark of a city that was expanding well beyond its walls in the late 1800s. The picture is a photochrom, a color process that combined a black-and-white photograph with several hand-prepared lithographic stones, each inked in a different color. The Detroit Publishing Company issued this view in its 1905 catalog of German scenes, which helped make photochroms a popular way for American households to bring distant places into the parlor.
