This photochrom view shows the bridge spanning the Rhine at Mannheim, a commercial city in Baden where the river meets the Neckar. The print was made by the Swiss firm Photoglob, which produced these photochroms by combining a black-and-white photograph with a set of color stones, and the Detroit Publishing Company sold the series in the United States under its own catalog. Its catalog notes and the 1890s date place it in the period when such colored views were popular with travelers and armchair tourists. The work is a useful record of how a working river crossing was presented to the public at the turn of the century.
