Stolzenfels Castle sits on a steep hill above the Rhine near Koblenz, and this photochrom pairs the fortress with its chapel against the river. The medieval ruin was rebuilt in the 1840s in a romantic Gothic Revival style for Frederick William, then crown prince of Prussia and later king, and it became a familiar stop on Rhine steamer tours. Photochrom prints were made by the Photochrom Co. of Zurich from several stone lithographs, then hand-retouched in soft blues, greens, and ochres. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views in America as souvenirs of Germany around the turn of the century.
