Erdmannsdorf's castle stands in the foothills of the Riesengebirge, the Giant Mountains along the Silesian border, in a part of Europe that was German when this view was made. The image is a photochrom, a process that used several stone lithographs to build up color over a black-and-white photograph. Photochroms like this one were made in Switzerland and sold in quantity in the 1890s, and the Detroit Publishing Company later marketed them in America as scenic views of Germany and other countries.
