Perched above the Selke valley in the Harz Mountains near Ballenstedt, Falkenstein Castle is a hilltop fortress tied to the Ascanian counts, the noble house that ruled much of what became the Duchy of Anhalt. This Photochrom print, made between about 1890 and 1900, shows the castle as tourists of the period would have seen it, with its towers and walls set against the wooded slopes. Photochrom was a Swiss color process that used several lithographic stones to layer tints over a photograph, and its vivid, painterly results made it popular for travel souvenirs. The castle's rugged position and its ties to a medieval dynasty drew many visitors to the Harz during these decades.
