Goslar's Gewandhaus, the old cloth hall on the market square in this town on the northern edge of the Harz mountains, shows the civic pride of a city that once grew rich on textile trade and the nearby silver mines. The building dates from the late 15th century and is a fine example of German Gothic civic architecture. This hand-colored photochrom was made in the 1890s by a process that layered several tinted printing stones over a photograph, and the Detroit Publishing Company later sold such views in the United States. The sharp detail of the gabled facade and the surrounding square makes it a useful record of the town as it looked before the twentieth century.
