Few towns in the Harz Mountains keep as many half-timbered houses as Wernigerode, whose timber-framed gables crowd narrow lanes below the castle on its hillside. The scene captures the old town around the 1890s, when rail travel was bringing visitors to hike the forested uplands. The photochrom process behind it transferred a photograph onto a separate lithographic stone for each color, then hand-finished the result for a soft, painterly glow. The Detroit Publishing Company distributed such views in America through its catalog, and this one was issued as print number 16912.
