The Bodekessel is a rocky basin in the Bode Gorge of the Harz mountains in central Germany, where the Bode River has cut a deep, narrow valley through granite. Its name refers to the round pool that the water has worn into the rock, a feature that drew visitors who came to walk the gorge and its cliffs. This print was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined photographs with hand-applied color stones, and it was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company, which sold such views of Germany to American buyers around 1905.
