Boats moored at the Uhlenhouster Ferry, a crossing in the Uhlenhorst district on Hamburg's Alster lakes, make up the subject of this view. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that transferred photographs to paper through hand-applied tints. The Detroit Publishing Company later sold many such views of Germany and other European places to American buyers, and its catalog numbering appears on this print. The 1890s were a period when travel imagery of European cities was widely collected, and the soft, layered colors here show how the process rendered water and waterfront scenes.
