The Aussen-Alster, the outer of the two artificial lakes on the Alster river in central Hamburg, is the water that anchors this view, with its pleasure gardens and leisure grounds lining the shore. Photochrom prints like this one were made by the Photochrom process, a costly method of hand-coordinated color lithography developed in Switzerland, and the Detroit Publishing Company later issued many of its German views in catalogues such as the one cited here. Taken between about 1890 and 1900, the picture captures a city that was growing fast as a commercial port and a place for middle-class strolling, boating and open-air entertainment. Its soft, saturated colors were part of the appeal for travelers and armchair tourists of the period.
