The Altenstein picture shows a castle set in the Thuringian landscape, a view that the Detroit Publishing Company sold as a souvenir of German travel. Altenstein was a residence of the ducal house of Saxe-Meiningen, and its romantic architecture and park grew out of the nineteenth-century taste for picturesque estates. This print is a photochrom, made by a process that hand-colored a photograph into vivid, almost painterly tones. Its catalog number, 6528, places it in the company's series of German views, which were marketed to American travelers and armchair tourists in the years around 1900.
