This view shows the castle at Ballenstedt, a small town in the Harz mountains of central Germany. The town is tied to the Ascanian line of princes, whose later Anhalt descendants held the castle as a residence. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that combined photographic negatives with hand-applied color stones, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold these images in the United States as souvenir views of Europe. Its scenes of castles and towns like this one give a clear picture of how Germany was presented to travelers in the 1890s.
