Gernrode sits in the Harz mountains of central Germany, and its best-known landmark is the St. Cyriakus collegiate church, founded in the tenth century and one of the oldest surviving Ottonian churches in the country. This photochrom print shows the town in the 1890s, when the process was used to produce richly colored travel views. The Detroit Publishing Company sold these prints in America, and this example appears in its 1905 catalog of German views, where it was offered to American buyers as a picture of a quiet, historic German town.
