Rüdesheim am Rhein sits where the river turns sharply northward through the Rhine Gorge, and this view takes in the town as it looked to a visitor arriving by steamer. The town was already a fixture of the wine trade and of the tourist routes that followed the river, and its vineyards climbing the slopes behind the houses drew travelers as much as the town itself did. The photochrom process used to make this print was a Swiss technique that transferred photographs onto stone and then inked them in several colors, giving the scene a painted, saturated look. Prints like this one, from the late 1890s, were sold widely as souvenirs and show how German river towns were presented to tourists at the time.
