This photochrom shows a general view of Saalfeld, a town in Thuringia on the Saale River, in what was then the Saxe-Meiningen duchy. The Photochrom process, developed in Switzerland in the 1880s, printed photographs in color from multiple stone plates, producing soft, painterly tones that suited scenic views. The Detroit Publishing Company later sold these German views in America through its catalogues, and this print's number appears in its 1905 listing. The record dates it to roughly the 1890s, when such travel images were popular with tourists and armchair travelers alike.
