Lüneburg, a town in the former Kingdom of Hanover, appears here in a general view that takes in the town as a whole rather than a single landmark. The town grew wealthy in the Middle Ages from its salt trade and was a member of the Hanseatic League, a legacy visible in its brick Gothic churches and gabled houses. The print was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that combined a photograph with several hand-applied color stone plates. The Detroit Publishing Company sold such views in America, listed in its 1905 catalog, so the colors are a period interpretation rather than an exact record.
