Klein-Venedig, or Little Venice, is a riverside quarter of Hildesheim where old half-timbered houses and mills line the arms of the Innerste River, and the nickname points to the canals of the Italian city. This photochrom print shows the scene in the process's saturated color, a method developed in Zurich in the 1880s for souvenir views of European towns. The Detroit Publishing Company, which held American rights to photochrom, sold such views through its catalog, and this one is numbered 17525 in its 1905 listing. The print itself is generally dated to the 1890s.
