A broad view of Jena, the university town on the Saale River in Thuringia, shows the city as it looked around the 1890s. The photochrom process behind it, an early method of color printing developed in Zurich, built color images from several photographic plates and was sold widely in Europe and America. Detroit Publishing Co. issued this print in its 1905 catalog of German views, numbered 1748. Jena was then known for its university and for the Carl Zeiss optical works, a major center of precision instrument making.
