From the Hausberge, a hill above the town, this view looks down on Jena in the Saale valley of Thuringia. The record spells the name "Hansberge," which is likely a misspelling of Hausberge. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the late 1880s that combined several colored stones with a photographic image. This example was issued by the Detroit Publishing Co. as number 9655 in its 1905 catalog of German views. At the time, Jena was known for its university and the Zeiss optical works, both of which helped shape the town's growth.
