The Kyffhäuser Monument stands on a wooded ridge in Thuringia and crowns the hill with an equestrian figure of Emperor William I, the first emperor of the German Empire. It was built in the 1890s to link the new imperial state with an older legend that Frederick Barbarossa slept inside the mountain until Germany needed him. The photochrom process behind this print combined several lithographic stones to produce color, and Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views of German landmarks to American buyers around 1900.
