The view shows the Kaiser Wilhelm monument on the Kyffhäuser, a wooded ridge in Thuringia, with a restaurant beside it. The monument, a massive memorial to Emperor Wilhelm I and the founding of the German Empire in 1871, was built in the 1890s. Local legend held that the medieval emperor Frederick Barbarossa slept inside the mountain, so the site drew many visitors. This print was made by the photochrom process, which added hand-applied color to a photographic image, and it was issued by the Detroit Publishing Company as part of its catalog of German views.
