Gotha's Schloss Friedenstein, a Baroque palace on a hill above the town, anchors this view, with the wooded Inselberg rising in the distance on the edge of the Thuringian Forest. The photochrom process behind it, developed by the Photoglob company in Zürich, combined a black-and-white photograph with hand-prepared color stones to produce a richly tinted image. The Detroit Publishing Company bought rights to these plates and sold them in the United States as travel views, so this print is both a record of a German town in the 1890s and a window onto how American buyers once pictured Europe.
