The view of Blankenburg, a small town in Thuringia set among wooded hills near the Thuringian Forest, captures a quiet German settlement at the end of the nineteenth century. The image is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that combined photography with hand-prepared color stone lithography to produce vivid prints for travelers and collectors. This copy was issued by the Detroit Publishing Co., which marketed photochroms in America and listed it as print number 6470 in its 1905 catalog, though the underlying photograph dates from about 1890 to 1900.
