Bad Liebenstein, a spa town in the Thuringian Forest of central Germany, is the subject here, shown from the Reichshöhe, a rise that offered travelers a broad view over the town. The picture is a photochrom, a color process developed by a Swiss firm that combined photographic negatives with multiple lithographic stones to produce a print with a painted, glowing finish. Detroit Publishing Co. sold these German views in America, and this one appears in its 1905 catalog, which helps date the sheet and shows how widely such scenes of European resorts and landscapes circulated.
