Shown beside the Aue Gate (Aue-Tor) in Kassel, this view centers on the Krieger Monument, a war memorial in the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau. Towns across Germany raised monuments like this to honor soldiers who had fallen in battle, and such memorials often stood at busy civic spaces where residents passed daily. The picture is a photochrom, a process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s that tinted black-and-white photographs with color printed from multiple stones, giving the scene its soft, painterly tones.
