The Hercules monument crowns the hillside of Wilhelmshöhe Park above Kassel, and the cascades in this view descend from its base in a long series of terraces and basins. The copper statue of the mythical hero stands on an octagonal pyramid, and the water system was built in the early 18th century under the landgraves of Hesse-Kassel, who designed the park as a showpiece of princely power. Photochrom prints like this one, produced by the Detroit Publishing Company in the 1890s and early 1900s, were prized by travelers and collectors for their saturated color, which lends the stone, foliage and water a painterly glow.
