Kassel served as the administrative center of the Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau, so this government building housed the offices that ran the region. The print is a photochrom, an early color process that built up an image from several lithographic stones, each inked with a different hue made from a photograph. The Detroit Publishing Company, which sold these views in America, issued it in its 1905 catalog as number 16582 in a series of German scenes. The photograph itself dates from the 1890s, a period when travel views like this one were popular with American and European buyers.
