The Greek Chapel stands on the Neroberg hill above Wiesbaden, the spa town in the former Prussian province of Hesse-Nassau. Duke Adolf of Nassau had it built in the 1840s and 1850s as a memorial to his first wife, Grand Duchess Elena Pavlovna of Russia, and its gilded onion domes reflect the Russian Orthodox style she grew up with. This photochrom print, made by the Detroit Publishing Co. from Swiss color plates, shows the chapel as tourists saw it in the 1890s, when the hilltop was a popular excursion from the town's famous baths.
