Lahneck Castle stands on a rocky height above the town of Nieder-Lahnstein, where the Lahn River meets the Rhine, and this print shows the two together. The castle has medieval origins and was tied for centuries to the Electors of Mainz, who used the Rhine and Lahn crossing to guard and collect tolls. Like most Detroit Publishing Co. views, it was made by the photochrom process, in which a black-and-white photograph was transferred to stone and then colored by hand, giving the Rhine landscape its soft, saturated tones. Such prints were sold widely to travelers and armchair tourists in the 1890s and early 1900s.
