The Sängersaal, or Singers' Hall, is the great room in the palas of Wartburg Castle above Eisenach in Thuringia, and it takes its name from the legendary song contest of medieval minnesingers. Built in the late 12th century, the hall was later decorated with Moritz von Schwind's painted cycle of the contest, completed in the 1850s. By the 1890s the castle drew many tourists, who also saw the rooms where Martin Luther had stayed in 1521 and 1522. The Detroit Publishing Company sold this color view in the United States, made by a Swiss photochrom process.
