Few German fortresses rise as dramatically as the Veste Coburg, and this view centers on the Fürstenbau, the princely residential wing within the hilltop complex. The fortress overlooks the town of Coburg, which lies in Bavaria near the border with Thuringia, and its origins reach back to the medieval period. Martin Luther lodged there for several months in 1530 while the Diet of Augsburg was in session, and he remained at the castle rather than traveling to the city itself. This print was made by the Detroit Publishing Company using the photochrom process, which relied on Swiss-produced color plates, and it shows the site as visitors of the 1890s would have known it.
