The courtyard of Heidelberg Castle, set above the Neckar valley in Baden, is the subject here, and its Renaissance façades were already partly ruined when this view was made. The castle was damaged in the wars of the late 17th century and later struck by lightning, which left its walls as the picturesque shell that drew visitors through the 19th century. This print uses the photochrom process, in which a photograph was transferred to stone plates and colored by hand, giving the image its soft, painted look. Detroit Publishing Co. issued it in a catalog of German views, and the record dates it to roughly the 1890s.
