The octagonal tower and terrace belong to the castle that rises above the old town of Heidelberg, on the slope above the Neckar River in Baden. Its ruins were a favorite stop for nineteenth-century travelers, who came to see the Renaissance-era walls and the gardens laid out on the terraces. This print comes from the Photochrom process, which the Swiss firm Photoglob developed to make color views from photographs, and the Detroit Publishing Co. later sold such images in the United States. Its catalog number and the date range suggest a souvenir view made for the tourist trade of the 1890s.
