Offenburg is a small town in the Baden region of southwestern Germany, sitting where the Rhine plain meets the foothills of the Black Forest, and this general view takes in the town as a whole rather than a single landmark. The print was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that produced color from a black-and-white photograph combined with several hand-prepared lithographic stones, each inked in a different color. Detroit Publishing Company sold such prints in America under its own catalog, and this one, number 6557 in the 1905 listing of German views, shows how travel imagery of the late 1890s was packaged for American buyers.
