Trimberg, a village in the Black Forest of Baden, is the subject of this photochrom view, one of the German scenes the Detroit Publishing Company sold in the United States. The photochrom process, developed in Switzerland, started from a black-and-white photograph. Artisans then built up color with multiple lithographic stones, which gave these prints their soft, painted look. The record dates the image to roughly the 1890s, a period when travel photography of Germany's scenic regions was popular with both tourists and armchair viewers.
