Mainau is a small island in Lake Constance, the Bodensee, just off the German city of Konstanz in Baden, and this view presents it as a place of gardens and a palace rather than a town street. The print is a photochrom, a color process that began with a black-and-white photographic negative, which was then transferred to a set of lithographic stones, one per color, and hand-finished. Detroit Publishing Co. sold such views in America, and this example is numbered 1585 in its 1905 catalog. Its estimated date falls in the 1890s, when the process was popular for postcard-style travel pictures of Europe, so the image offers a snapshot of tourism on the lake at that time.
