Sassnitz, a port town on the Baltic coast of Rügen, Germany's largest island, is the subject here, shown with its working harbor and the water beyond. The photochrom process used to make this color view was developed in Switzerland in the 1880s and used multiple stone lithographs, each inked by hand, to build up color over a black-and-white photograph. Detroit Publishing Co. issued these views in the United States under license, and this copy appears in its 1905 catalog as number 9877, a useful record of how German travel scenes were sold to American buyers.
