Bremen's Free Port, the harbor district on the Weser River, let merchants store and handle goods without paying the usual customs duties, a privilege that helped the city become one of Germany's great trading centers. This print shows that waterfront as it looked in the 1890s, when the port was busy with shipping and commerce. It was made by the photochrom process, a early method of producing color prints from photographs, which the Detroit Publishing Company sold in America as souvenir views of Germany. The soft, painted-looking colors reflect the process as much as the scene itself.
