Steamships tied up at a wharf in Stettin, the Pomeranian port now called Szczecin in Poland, give this view a working waterfront rather than a posed scene. Stettin sat on the Oder River near the Baltic and handled steady cargo and passenger traffic in the 1890s, when German merchant shipping was growing. The picture was made by the photochrom process, a Swiss method that printed color from multiple lithographic stones, and it reached American buyers through the Detroit Publishing Company, whose 1905 catalog lists it among its German views.
