Colberg's harbor and pilot station, in the German province of Pomerania, is the focus here. The town is now Kołobrzeg in Poland. Pilots based at such stations boarded incoming ships and guided them through the shallow, shifting channels at the harbor mouth. The print uses photochrom, a Swiss process from the 1880s that layered several hand-applied color stones over a photograph, giving the scene its soft, painted tone. Detroit Publishing Company sold views like this to American buyers of European travel souvenirs.
