Cleves, the German town in the record's title, is better known in English by its older spelling, and this view shows its waterfront and harbor, with the town's hilltop buildings rising behind. Cleves was once the seat of the Duchy of Cleves, and its castle above the town recalls that earlier role. This print is a photochrom, a color process developed by the Photoglob company in Zurich and sold in America by the Detroit Publishing Company. Its catalog entry, from 1905, places it among the company's many German views, which were made to show European towns in vivid color.
