Lübeck's harbor on the Trave River is the subject here, a view of the port of a city that grew rich as a Hanseatic trading center on the Baltic. The print is a photochrom, a color process developed in Switzerland in the 1880s, which the Detroit Photographic Company, later Detroit Publishing Co., adopted for American sale. Its catalog reference places it among the company's Views of Germany, most likely made in the 1890s. Worth noticing are the soft, saturated colors, built up from several printing plates over a photographic base, which give the scene the look of a hand-colored picture.
