Print no. 1183 shows the harbor at Naples, a busy port on the Gulf of Naples that had drawn travelers since the eighteenth-century Grand Tour. The view belongs to a series of Italian architecture and site views made by the photochrom process, which printed a photograph in color using multiple lithographic stones. Dated roughly between 1890 and 1900, when tinted views of foreign cities sold well to tourists, it records the waterfront and shipping of that period. The soft, layered color gives the water and sky a painterly quality that plain black-and-white photographs of the time rarely achieved.
