Moonlight softens the harbor at Algiers in this view, one of the Algeria scenes issued in the Detroit Photographic Company's late-1890s catalog of color prints. The photochrom process behind it was costly: a photographic negative was transferred to several lithographic stones, each inked in a different tone, so that a black-and-white exposure became a colored print. Detroit Photographic held the American rights to the process and sold these views of distant places to people who could not travel there themselves. Algiers, the French-administered port on the Mediterranean, was a popular subject for such scenes.
