Men seated at a chessboard in Algiers are the subject of this Detroit Publishing Company view, one of many scenes of Algeria in the company's catalog. The photochrom process behind it, licensed from a Swiss firm, produced color prints by layering several stone-printed inks over a photographic image, which gives the scene a soft, hand-tinted look. Algiers had been under French colonial rule since 1830, and tourist views like this one, issued around 1899, offered American buyers a glimpse of North African daily life. The catalog's wording reflects the attitudes of its day, so the picture is best read as a record of how outside publishers chose to frame local residents.
