Warships riding at anchor in the harbor set this view of Algiers apart from the company's other scenes, with gray hulls against the white city rising up the hillside. France had held Algiers since its 1830 conquest, and by the late 1890s the port was a working center of French naval and maritime traffic in the Mediterranean. The Detroit Photographic Company's photochrom process built its color through several successive stone printing passes, so the blue water and the ochre and whitewashed buildings were layered onto a photographic base. Prints like this were sold to travelers and to readers who wanted color views of distant places.
