A cemetery in Algiers, the port city that French forces had taken in 1830, is the subject of this photochrom view. The Detroit Photographic Company issued it in its catalog of scenic and architectural views around 1899. The photochrom process, licensed from a Swiss firm, started from a black-and-white photograph and transferred hand-applied color through lithographic stones, which gave these prints their soft, layered tones. Worth noticing is how the color suggests the Mediterranean light that drew travelers to North Africa, and how the company sold such views as souvenirs and collectors' pieces.
