A woman and a young child stand together on a flat rooftop terrace in Algiers, a setting where households often spent time outdoors. The print is a photochrom made by the Detroit Photographic Company, which held rights to a Swiss process that built color images from several hand-prepared lithographic stones. Around 1899 the company sold views like this as souvenirs of travel in North Africa, so the scene reflects both everyday domestic life and the tourist's eye of the period.
